Distraction
Updated: Nov 21, 2022
I got invited to go rollerskating recently and knowing I hadn't been in years, I had already prepared myself to be embarrassed. I also was determined to try to do better than what I thought I would. Stepping out onto the rink, immediately fear came over me because I was wobbly and felt like I couldn’t lift my feet. Am I truly ready for this? I needed the wall to support me, a self pep talk and the motivation of my friends to keep going. After a while I noticed that I started to move faster, pick my legs up quicker and I didnt need the wall anymore! I was in my own groove until I tried to look up and over to the side and then, BAM! I hit the floor. I got distracted and it cost me.
This very moment reminded me of when you first get saved- you're a little shaky at first because all your old ways are not completely gone. Since you're stepping into something new, you have to get adjusted to this new life God has created for you. After a while, God will place you in a groove that you feel comfortable-praying more, reading more, old habits disappear, etc. You’ll get so strong you’ll feel like you're soaring in the clouds with God, but then BAM! That’s when trouble comes. Distractions come at such a good point in your life because the enemy wants you to lose focus. Keep in mind, I fell 3 times during skating because of distractions- looking at people coming in, watching my friends doing tricks, etc. It's the same as with this journey-distractions such as reminiscing on the past, friends/family, fear, anything can come.
Once I took my eyes off the rink is the moment I lost control-the moment you take your eyes off Jesus is when the enemy tries to sneak in. Granted I’m not a great skater, but if I keep practicing, I’m sure I’ll get to a point where distractions won’t make me fall. So if you continue to do the tasks to grow in Christ, the easier it will be to fight the enemy’s tactics. Pray, read, form that relationship that you need with God. It may be hard but you might have to stop watching that certain show, stop listening to certain music, unfollow that person on social media with the negative posts, cut people out of your life-whatever may hinder your walk with God has to go. Distractions come in all shapes, forms and sizes.
Ask God to show you what or who may be a distraction and to have guidance on how to move forward. It’s not the easiest thing to do but nothing and nobody is worth more than what God can provide. I cut a lot of distractions out of my life and I immediately felt stronger spiritually, mentally and emotionally. Change can be a good thing, especially a godly change.
God is with you every step of the way and He will help you but you need to have a made up mind. You have to be willing to let go of whatever needs to be released. Whatever leaves are not compared to the glory coming in. With God, there is no comparison and no need to regret what you left behind. Distraction won’t help you but God will. Let's not be like Martha in Luke 10: 38-42 , who was so distracted by all her housley duties, that she could not even reverence the glory of Jesus, sitting right there in front of her face.
The more you grow in God, the more distractions will fade away naturally because your interest won’t be there anymore. God is your support system-He knows what’s best for you. So if something isn’t benefiting you, then what good is it? You want to gain a deeper relationship with God, but there’s no gain because of a blockage. If there is no change, you have to look at yourself and evaluate. God wants you to come as you are so He can transform you for the better, but come with a heart of surrender. So the real question is are you READY to let go of the distractions? Are you ready to step out on the rink?
